The Effect Of Fast Fashion On Your Personal Finances
Updated: Aug 7

Why is fast fashion so fast? A trending pair of shoes can only trend for about 3 to 6 months until its no longer trendy. This continuous time loop of its a trend, can effect your savings and personal finance more than you think. While fast fashion can sometimes seem or feel affordable, constantly keeping up with trends can hurt your personal finances. Especially by increasing unnecessary spending and reducing savings.
Why Fast Fashion Encourages Spending?
Fast fashion has many contributions why you become encouraged to spend money. Some main reasons being people buying new clothes when they don't need them, and influencers and social media creating pressure to keep up with the trends. You may think I never get pressured into buying things, well you online shopping cart says otherwise. You also wouldn’t be reading this article if you haven’t been buying things you didn’t need. Yes at one point all of us will be influenced to buy something because it seemed like a good purchase. Its like when moms find a new kitchen tool and need everyone to see how amazing it is, then the rest of the moms also want it. That's an example of friends and family also contributing to your decision making.
The Financial Impact:
However small a purchase is it does tend to add up over time. Once you buy one trendy shirt and it goes out of style, to keep up with the trends you buy the new trendy shirt. On the other hand all the money you spent on those trendy clothes can be saved or invested. Don’t say I don’t know how to invest go read Investing 101: Easy Steps for New Investors on Finance Simplified, to learn the basics. Theres many things that money can go to instead of clothes so please think can this money be saved for a house, emergency fund, or other financial goals.
Why Trends Don’t Last:
As stated in the first paragraph most micro trends last 3 to 6 months. Most of the micro trends are created by celebrities and influencers. But what happens after the trend is over, well the clothes no longer being popular their not worn. Though it made you happy to buy these clothes you gotta think about will I actually wear this, or is it going to rot in my closet? Trends just creates wasted money and clutter, but is always hard to stay away from a trend. Especially when clothing stores find out about the trend, then all you see is that trend. Honestly, its trends are the best for any clothing store mainly because most clothing collections change every few weeks. So their as quick as the trend, so most times they don’t have great financial lost when pursuing a new trend.
Now How To Spend Smarter:
Create a clothing budget, repeat with me create a clothing budget. You don’t want to be that person in a cartoon who has flies flying out of their wallet. Buy basics that are high quality instead of the new trend. Take your time with buying impulse purchases, at minimum wait 24-48hrs before purchasing. That can save you money and help make better decisions. Another way to keep spending minimum even when you have the urge to buy is to thrift or buy secondhand. It is very budget friendly especially for the people who still want to be fashionistas.
Conclusion:
As we have learned the damage a fast fashion trend can be to your personal finances, some memorable things would be budgeting, taking time with impulse buys, and find another way to use the money like saving or investing. Take your time buying anything especially overpriced fashion, but don’t take away the fun of buying new clothes. But really allow yourself to process is this a need or a want, then decide if the purchase will be worth the money. Making thoughtful purchases today can help you save more money and build better financial habits for the future.
